This June is 23rd national “Work Safety Month” with the theme “Everyone Matters in Safety Management and Emergency Response Keep Escape Routes Unobstructed”. Boeing Zhoushan Completion Center (BZCC) and Delivery Center (BZDC) held themed activities of “One ceremony, Two contests, and Three drills”, focusing on” Keep Escape Routes Unobstructed”.
One Ceremony: “Work Safety Month” Opening Ceremony
“Whose responsibility is safety?” asked BZCC’s CEO Dermot Swan at the opening ceremony of the event. Someone answered, “Safety is everyone’s responsibility”, but then corrected by Dermot that accurately safety is the responsibility of each one of us, and keeping that in mind, whoever can prevent major accidents from happening. He demonstrated the role of each to ensure safety by sharing a real airplane incident and underscored our liability to our and others' safety.
It is followed by a story shared by Todd Abraham, CEO of Delivery Center (BZDC). He was often asked a question when he was a pilot “Where do you like to fly the most?”, while the answer has been easy and constant “Home”.
All staff at present were deeply moved by remarks from Dermot and Todd. All seriously put their signature on the poster printed “Safety of People, Safety of Product” at the last session and showed the determination to fulfill safety duties to ensure the safety of production by taking tangible actions like enhancing safety awareness and skills.
Two Contests: Preliminary and Final Contests of Safety Knowledge
Following the good reviews of last year’s first safety knowledge contest, Boeing Zhoushan held the second contest for this year. The online preliminary contest started on 14th June and actively involved our employees, and 14 contestants entered the final after a tough and challenging test of knowledge. The final, continuing last year’s rule had required questions and quick questions. Contestants had similar scores during the required question session leveraging their safety knowledge, but a quick question session needed not only brain power but hand speed and fast response. The contest reached a climax with the leader role changing many times over the period.
After an hour’s fierce competition, Tara Chen from BZDC was the winner, and Robert Liang from BPO, BZCC, and Stan Weng from Paint, BZCC got the second and third places respectively.
Three drills: confined space rescue drill, lift rescue drill, and emergency evacuation drill
“Hello, we are trapped in the NO.1 lift of 101. The door failed to open and please get someone to help.” “OK, I’ll call the rescue team. Don’t be worried and stay calm.” This was what happened during the lift rescue drill, one of three drills during “Work Safety Month”. On 21st June, BZCC organized a lift rescue drill together with security supplier, facility maintenance vendor, and lift maintenance vendor, up to a dozen people in total. The simulated accident scenario was a failure of the lift operation causing people to be trapped, and personnel on duty to start emergency response immediately once the alarm sounded. The drill helps in improving emergency response to incidents alike through close coordination and compliant procedure strictly carried out from alarm sounding, the emergency procedure initiation to the actual rescue. In addition, BZCC organized confined space rescue on 19th June and held an emergency evacuation at the beginning of July.
Activities during Work Safety Month have fully mobilized staff engagement in safety production, and ‘Everyone Matters in Safety Management and Emergency Response” has been truly realized by enhancing safety awareness, acquiring safety knowledge, and mastering emergency response skills. In the meantime, Boeing Zhoushan will continue acting on the principle of “Safety of people, Safety of Product”, and pragmatically ensure safety in production for creating a safe and healthy work environment for all staff.
